Knitting, like any art or craft can be expensive. For those of us on low incomes, I share a few favorite free patterns and lower-cost quality yarn resources.

Purl Soho Free Patterns

Note: I have worked Porto Blanket, Prism Blanket, and Half & Half Triangle Wrap

Ysolda Teague Fingerless Mitts Free Pattern

Note: I used worsted weight yarn instead of DK weight in the Small Adult size and found this fits most adult hands perfectly.

Joji Locatelli Free Hat Pattern

Note: I have made several of these hats in different yarn weights and it’s a brilliant, simple, memorizable pattern with a great fit for most heads.

Cost-Cutting Quality Yarn Sources

Please share others you know, but these are my go-to sources for bulk discounted non-superwash fibers. Superwash yarns go through a chemical process to make them machine washable and tend to feel irritating on my hands and seem to stretch out with gravity more than regular wool/plant fibers. Here is an article about the process for those interested.

The sites below, one in Denmark, two in the U.S., all offer rotating discounted yarns, bulk discounts, and reduced or free shipping options.

Little Knits

I love examples of knitwear businesses like this small company in Germany whose mission is all about sustainably grown and resourced fiber production. I am honored to be test knitting a pattern during January for their issue number 14 Making Stories magazine. Test knitting is a subject I will leave for a future blog post.
